Welcoming Australia’s Protection for Iranian Women’s Football Team

The Australian Iranian Council Incorporated (AIC) welcomes and sincerely appreciates the Australian Government’s decision to provide protection to members of the Iranian women’s football team who faced serious risks following recent events.
These athletes travelled to Australia to participate in international sporting competitions.
However, during wartime, Iranian state media and officials publicly labelled members of the team as “traitors”, exposing them to significant threats should they return to Iran.
In response to these developments and the growing concern within the Iranian-Australian community, AIC launched a public petition calling on the Australian Government to grant protection to these athletes and ensure their safety.
We commend Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs, the Hon Tony Burke MP, Prime Minister the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, and the Australian Government for listening to the concerns raised by the community and for acting with compassion and principle.
Australia has a proud tradition of standing for human rights, fairness, and the protection of individuals facing persecution. By providing safety to these athletes, the Government has reaffirmed these values and demonstrated Australia’s commitment to protecting those who may be at risk because of their identity, beliefs, or circumstances.
Sport should be a bridge between cultures and nations. No athlete should face intimidation or danger simply for representing their country or for being perceived as acting independently from political authorities.
This decision offers these women the opportunity to live in safety and continue their sporting careers without fear. It also sends a clear message that Australia remains a country where freedom, dignity, and the rule of law are respected and protected.
AIC thanks the Australian Government for taking this important step and for recognising the legitimate concerns raised by the Iranian-Australian community.
The Australian Iranian Council will continue its work advocating for human rights, democratic values, and the safety of individuals who face threats or persecution.
