The Issue

My Birthmother's sister, a vibrant and loving woman filled with hope, was tragically murdered while pregnant. This devastating loss has left a permanent void in our lives, a pain that is immeasurable and ongoing. Beyond the devastating loss, the aftershocks of such a tragedy ripple through entire communities, impacting families, friends, and the very fabric of our society.

The crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit individuals, men, and children (MMIWG2S+) is a harrowing issue across America and Canada, where Indigenous communities face disproportionate rates of violence. Families and loved ones are left grappling with grief and trauma, often without adequate support systems to guide them through the healing process.

Statistics reveal that Indigenous women are nearly three times more likely to experience violence than non-Indigenous women. The trauma endured by their families and communities is compounded by systemic neglect and underfunding, leaving many without access to crucial mental health resources. These families not only confront the unspeakable pain of loss but also navigate a system that traditionally overlooks their needs.

It's urgent that we address the mental health support needs of these families. By establishing dedicated mental health services, developed in partnership with Indigenous communities, we can offer culturally sensitive care that acknowledges the unique challenges they face. Such services would provide much-needed counseling and support, fostering paths to healing and resilience.

Additionally, increasing awareness and education regarding the MMIWG2S+ crisis will help de-stigmatize seeking mental health support. This can empower families and individuals to pursue the care they need without fear or shame.

We urge governmental bodies, health organizations, and community leaders to commit to funding and implementing robust mental health support services for the families affected by MMIWG2S+ tragedies. It's time to listen, understand, and take actionable steps towards healing and justice.

Please sign this petition to show your support for mental health resources for those suffering in the wake of such unimaginable losses. Together, we can make a difference and foster a future where every family feels seen, heard, and supported.
