Provide larger Red lid bins in Kwinana suburbs
The issue
Living in Kwinana, I've witnessed firsthand the challenges tenants face with waste management. Almost a third of the community, comprising tenants who make up 28% of the population, struggle to manage their household waste due to bureaucratic hurdles. For these residents, obtaining an additional red lid bin requires the property owner’s approval, which is not always forthcoming. This situation becomes even more pressing for families with babies or pets, where waste generation is naturally higher despite diligent recycling efforts.
While the current waste management system was designed to reduce general waste, the introduction of the GO (Garden Organics) bin has been ineffective for many. A significant portion of the population does not require fortnightly or even monthly garden waste disposal, rendering the system costly and inefficient. Instead of easing the burden, the GO bin appears redundant for those who live in apartments or have minimal garden waste.
The constraints imposed by the inadequate red lid bins lead to overflow issues, unhygienic conditions, and increased stress for families trying to manage their waste responsibly. Providing larger red lid bins is not only a practical solution but a necessary one to accommodate the genuine needs of Kwinana’s diverse residents.
The solution is simple and feasible: implement larger red lid bins across Kwinana suburbs, particularly prioritizing those who demonstrate higher waste production. This could be part of a tiered system where residents can choose the bin size that meets their actual needs, making waste management more efficient and environmentally friendly.
I urge the local council to reevaluate the current waste management strategy and collaborate with the community to create a more inclusive and responsive system. Together, we can ensure that all residents, regardless of their housing situation, have access to the necessary resources for effective waste management.
"Officers cite the 0.44 per cent increase in second bin uptake as proof that demand is low. ” Which does not reflect the actual demand considering 28% are tenants and can not request an additional red bin without Property owner approval.
Join me in calling for a change that addresses the real-world challenges faced by Kwinana tenants and homeowners alike and to show them the true scale of need. Sign this petition to push for a sensible, scalable, and considerate waste management solution that benefits everyone in our vibrant community.
