The Issue

Each year, millions of pets and their responsible owners suffer because they can't afford emergency veterinary care. According to the American Pet Products Association, Americans spend over $30 billion annually on veterinary care, many times having to spend their savings, go into large amounts of debt they spend years paying off, or worse, have to make a decision that they never wanted to have to make.. the worst situation possible. This financial barrier leads to countless preventable deaths and severe emotional strain on the owners. This is absolutely unnecessary!

The access to financial support in times of emergency for pet owners is almost non-existent. CareCredit is not reliable or sometimes even feasible, and getting donation assistance isn't always available in emergencies. There is little time to waste gambling on approvals when lives are at risk.

Pet insurance often has a bias against claims and regularly get denied, so it is practically useless in many emergency scenarios, and unaffordable when they have pre existing conditions or are in their senior years. That doesn't mean their lives should be written off!

We urgently need government assistance in some form to make emergency pet care accessible for all. We pay plenty in the many taxes that are imposed upon us, a simple loan would not be that hard to implement.

Possible solutions include the establishment of federal or state funds dedicated to covering emergency veterinary costs for low-income households or providing subsidies to veterinary clinics, where they could in turn, offer payment plans. It's a terrible shame that they cannot in this current day and age (they have to pay their bills and employees too, so I do not blame them!) Moreover, the possibility of implementing a national Pet Medical Savings Account could allow pet owners to set aside tax-free funds specifically for unexpected medical expenses.

Local governments can also contribute by creating partnerships with veterinary schools, enabling discounted care through student programs under licensed supervision. Another approach could be revision of pet insurance programs supported or subsidized by federal or state governments instead of only having private insurers funds, ensuring that every pet has a safety net for emergency situations rather than only for those that are approved by these companies.

Providing government assistance for emergency pet care is not a luxury, but a necessity to prevent countless heartbreaks and unnecessary suffering. By signing this petition, you can help steer attention towards this vital cause and compel our policymakers to take immediate, compassionate action.

Please, let's come together to protect our pets and alleviate the emotional and financial burdens on pet owners everywhere. Sign this petition to make government-assisted emergency pet care a reality for everyone.
