Provide free travel for children aged 5 to 11 on public transport
The Issue
In today's challenging economic climate, every penny counts, especially for families living on a budget like mine. Just imagine being a parent with two children aged 5 and 7, trying to balance the household finances with an ever-increasing cost of living. We are currently spending £120.00 per month just to get our children to school on top of cost myself and my partner pay for our own transportation. Being on Universal Credit, this is a significant burden on our family budget as I am sure is the same for many other families.
The issue extends far beyond my own household. Countless families across the UK face the same financial strain when it comes to public transport for their children. School attendance is mandatory, yet the cost of getting children to their educational institutions is another hurdle that many parents struggle to overcome. Public transport fees combined with other living expenses create an overwhelming financial burden that no family should have to shoulder.
Let's consider the potential positive impacts of providing free public transport to children aged 5 to 11 years. Not only would it ease the financial pressure on families, but it would also promote better school attendance, reduce traffic congestion, and support environmental sustainability by encouraging the use of public transport from a young age. The future generation would grow up with an ingrained habit of using eco-friendly transit options.
We can look towards cities that have successfully implemented similar policies and note both the social and economic benefits they have reaped. For example, cities like London have seen how initiatives like free bus travel for under 11s can reduce the barriers to education and improve social inclusion.
I believe we can push for this necessary change by urging our local councils and transportation authorities to adopt a scheme that supports children and their education via free travel on buses and trams. They have the capability and resources; they need the conviction and will to execute such a program.
I am calling on like-minded individuals and stakeholders who believe in the importance of free access to education and supporting families in need, to stand with me. Together, we can make our voices heard and bring about a change that benefits everyone.
