The Issue

Children with autism are twice as likely to die from unintentional injuries than their neurotypical peers, and among these, drowning is the leading cause of death.

For families of children with autism, water is both a danger and an allure. Many autistic children are drawn to bodies of water, fascinated by its movement, its sounds, yet tragically unaware of the inherent dangers it poses. When they wander or elope, they often head towards water. This peril has been highlighted across various studies and by numerous autism advocacy organizations.

Research indicates that tailored interventions, such as specialized swimming lessons for autistic children, can drastically lower the risk of drowning. These lessons, designed to cater to the unique sensory and communication needs of autistic children, can teach them vital survival skills in a way they understand and retain. Yet, for many families, these lessons are financially out of reach.

We need to act now. By providing free survival swimming lessons, specifically tailored for children with autism in our community and across the country, we can make a significant difference. It's a small step with monumental potential to save lives.

We call on local and national authorities, as well as non-profit organizations, to collaborate on funding and delivering these essential programs. By prioritizing survival swimming as a public health initiative for autistic children, we offer hope and security to countless families.

Join us in this life-changing cause. Sign this petition to urge the government and relevant stakeholders to provide access to free, specialized survival swimming lessons for all autistic children. Together, we can prevent further tragedies and ensure our children have the safe, inclusive opportunities they deserve.
