The Issue

The majority of people I know have struggled or are currently struggling with their mental health. Mental health is an issue everywhere, and that includes Newton, Massachusetts. Many teenagers in our community are battling mental health problems. While Newton is overall a very wealthy city, there are still people here who are unable to afford the services they need.

Mental health challenges like anxiety, depression, and stress-related disorders are increasing problems among teenagers. According to the American Psychological Association, nearly one in three teenagers in the United States experience anxiety. Here in Newton, we must ask ourselves how many are silently enduring this without support, simply because they cannot afford professional care.

Mental healthcare is a fundamental right and vital to a healthy adolescence. When teenagers receive necessary mental health services, it not only improves their quality of life but also their prospects for the future. It enhances their ability to perform academically, and develop socially.

There is a clear solution: fund programs within our community to provide free mental health services for teenagers who cannot afford them. Local policy-makers can use funds from the community budget or seek partnerships with mental health nonprofits to create accessible resources. Increasing the number of school counselors would immediately provide help.

This is an issue that affects us all. By supporting this petition, you are advocating for a healthier, more supportive environment for teenagers in Newton. Let's work together to ensure that every young person in our community has the chance to access mental health services they need, regardless of their financial situation.

Sign this petition if you believe every teen deserves access to mental health care without financial barriers. Your support can drive the change we need in Newton, providing hope and help to those who need it most. Together, we can make mental wellness accessible to all our teens.
