I am asking Selwyn District Council to introduce a policy that provides free pads and tampons in the public bathrooms at Lincoln Library. I suggest beginning with a small three-month trial so the Council can monitor the cost, demand and practicality before deciding whether to continue it.

Periods can begin unexpectedly, and people do not always have access to products with them. Having products available in the bathroom would allow people to access them privately without needing to ask a staff member or leave the library.

Free period products are already provided in many New Zealand schools through the Government’s Ikura programme. Other councils have also introduced them in community facilities and libraries. This shows that a small trial at Lincoln Library is achievable.

The trial could provide a basic selection of pads and tampons in a clearly labelled container or dispenser. Staff could monitor how often they need to be restocked, and the Council could review the trial after three months.
