Provide free composting services in Douglas County, Colorado
The Issue
Living in the beautiful landscapes of Douglas County, Colorado, I've always felt a strong connection to nature. As a devoted resident who cherishes our natural environment, I'm concerned about the amount of waste we produce and the limited ways we have to address it sustainably, especially as more people move into our beautiful community. Composting is an effective way to reduce waste, enrich our soil, and combat climate change, yet many residents in Douglas County are unable to access this service due to cost barriers. This initiative is deeply personal to me as I believe in leaving a viable planet for future generations.
Research shows that over 30% of what we throw away is organic material that can be composted. When these materials end up in landfills, they decompose anaerobically, releasing harmful methane gas—a potent greenhouse gas contributing significantly to global warming. A study by Project Drawdown found that composting can reduce carbon emissions by up to 0.1 gigatons annually if adopted broadly.
Numerous municipalities across the United States, like Boulder and San Francisco, have successfully implemented free or low-cost composting programs, encouraging residents to recycle organic waste instead of discarding it as trash. These programs have proven to significantly reduce landfill waste, improve local soil quality, and foster community responsibility towards environmental stewardship.
We propose that Douglas County offer free composting services to all residents. This can be achieved by setting up community compost drop-off sites, providing subsidized home composting bins, and educating residents about composting benefits and practices. We urge the county officials to allocate funding in the environmental services budget to make this a reality.
By offering such a service, we can transform Douglas County into a leader in environmental responsibility and sustainability. Together, we can reduce our collective carbon footprint and enhance our local ecosystem. Let's make Douglas County a cleaner, greener place for everyone.
Please sign this petition to tell our county officials that we need free composting services in Douglas County. Your signature can help create a lasting positive impact for our community and our planet.
