Many times, a life could be saved with immediate access to Narcan (Naloxone), but unfortunately, this is not easily available when it is most needed. In a state like Michigan, where opioid-related deaths have reached epidemic proportions, this simple life-saving measure should be accessible to everyone.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2020, nearly 2,684 people died from opioid overdoses in Michigan. 

Narcan is safe, effective, and can be administered by anyone with minimal training. Communities across the United States that have made Narcan widely available have seen remarkable reductions in opioid-related fatalities. For instance, in neighboring Ohio, public health campaigns to increase accessibility to Narcan through public kiosks and community partnerships have begun to show promising results in curbing the tide of the opioid epidemic.

We urge the Warren city council and local health authorities to commit to placing Narcan in strategic public locations throughout our city. This includes parks, libraries, community centers, and other high-traffic areas. Additionally, providing training sessions for the community on how to use Narcan could further enhance its effectiveness and ensure everyone is prepared to save a life.

Our community has the power to tackle this crisis head-on and make Warren a model for how cities can respond to the opioid epidemic with compassion and proactive measures.
