The Issue
I am a mother to wonderful children, and I am writing this petition to seek financial change for families like mine, who are affected by mental health challenges. My family and I struggle daily due to our mental health conditions, making it difficult for me to maintain employment and provide the necessary resources and support for my children. None of us are able to drive, further complicating our ability to access essential services, healthcare, and social support systems.
Mental illnesses are pervasive and debilitating, affecting millions of families across the globe. In the United States alone, 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness annually, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Yet, many of these individuals face financial hardships because of the stigma and difficulties associated with mental health disorders that prevent them from holding steady work and accessing necessary resources.
Families like ours need support to manage daily life and ensure a better quality of living. We need concrete actions, such as increased government support in the form of disability benefits, mental health care subsidies, and accessible transportation solutions that take into account the unique barriers faced by those with mental health challenges.
I urge our local, state, and federal legislators to recognize the plight of families battling mental illnesses and implement broader financial assistance programs. This includes expanding eligibility for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits to cover more families affected by mental health conditions, and ensuring mental health treatment is affordable and accessible.
This is not just about financial change; it’s about dignity, equality, and giving families like mine the chance to thrive rather than merely survive. Please join me in advocating for a world where mental health is given its due importance and support. Sign this petition to bring financial change and hope to families affected by mental illness. Together, we can make a difference.
