Provide compensation to all martyred teachers, they were on duty even during COVID

The Issue

The second wave of COVID killed more than 100 teachers in India’s capital. The Delhi government decided to provide relief and compensation to the families of the teachers who lost their lives during this period. But certain rules and procedural inconsistency in the compensation policy will lead to injustice to the families of some martyred teachers.

I have started this petition so that injustice is not done to the family of any teacher who lost their lives because of COVID. Please sign and share my petition and demand changes in the compensation policies of the Delhi government.

According to the existing rules, only the families of those teachers who were ‘on duty’ and died due to coronavirus will get compensated. Families of other teachers, who succumbed to the virus are said to be given a job.

It is so problematic that kids who lost their parents or families who lost their loved ones have to actually prove that the teacher died due to COVID. As Ajay Veer Yadav, general secretary of the Government School Teachers Association (GSTA) told a newspaper, “How can it be clear whether the death was due to COVID or not, while in many cases during the second wave, the investigation report came negative even though the person was infected.”

The second and bigger problem is to prove that a teacher, who died with covid was actually ‘ON DUTY’. When schools were closed during the second wave, some teachers were called to the school and made to work. In light of the second wave, the govt declared summer vacations a bit early and so many teachers were not ‘ON DUTY’.

According to the rules, 'on duty' means distribution of ration, vaccination, etc. What about teachers who risked their lives to do other school work during covid? What about those who left their homes and were in school?

This is why I humbly request the government to relook the compensation policy and if a teacher lost his/her life during covid then please:

1. Provide job one member of their family based on education qualification.

2. Provide the salary of the deceased till their children’s education is completed.

Sign our petition and share as much as you can and help us get justice for the family of teachers.
