Provide affordable student accommodation

Provide affordable student accommodation

The Issue

The start of my first academic year should be filled with excitement and opportunities. However, I find myself facing significant challenges that inhibit my ability to fully engage in the educational experiences available to me. One of the main issues I face is the lack of affordable student accommodation close to my institution.

Currently, I am forced to walk 1 hour and 30 minutes to get to school every day because I cannot afford the transport costs. This is not sustainable, especially when combined with the academic load and other responsibilities I have. The impact of this daily struggle is profound; it depletes my energy and affects my academic performance. Additionally, the time taken to walk such a long distance could be better spent on studying or participating in extracurricular activities that are crucial for my personal and professional development.

Moreover, as a student relying on bursaries to cover my tuition and basic necessities like groceries and personal care items, I am left with very little for meals. This scarcity means that I often go without lunch, adding to my financial and physical stress. The financial challenges are not only impacting my health and well-being but also threatening to derail my academic journey.

I am therefore calling on local educational institutions, the government, and relevant stakeholders to provide affordable student accommodation options close to campuses or provide subsidized transport for students who live far. This support would greatly enhance students' ability to perform academically by reducing the financial burdens that we carry.

I'm urging everyone to support this petition to help students like me access the basic necessities needed to thrive and successfully complete our education. Your signatures can make a real difference in advocating for more equitable educational opportunities. Please sign and share this petition to help create change for students facing similar hardships.
