I am an Ecologist who has grown up in the Meironnydd area of North West Wales and currently live within miles of the fire. It is devastating to see our natural environment being harmed by this wildfire that was allegedly started by an irresponsible wildcamper. Protected sites, species, and habitats are being destroyed. Not only is this impacting our vital ecosystems and the wildlife that calls it home, but it is also posing serious risks to human health and safety.

The ongoing wildfire in the Rhinogydd area is causing a severe threat. The fire continues to spread dangerously, and our courageous firefighters on the ground are doing everything they can. However, they desperately need aerial support to effectively combat and contain these intense flames.

Aerial firefighting resources, such as water-bombing aircraft and helicopters, are proven to be highly effective in managing and extinguishing wildfires swiftly. These resources can access remote and rugged terrains, dropping water and fire retardant directly on the fire's critical areas, something that ground forces might struggle with in vast and challenging landscapes like Rhinogydd.

Research indicates that timely aerial intervention in wildfires significantly reduces destruction and loss. According to the National Fire Protection Association, aerial resources can enhance overall firefighting efforts by providing tactical support, limiting the spread, and offering stand-off suppression in harder-to-reach areas.

We are calling on local authorities, NRW the Welsh Government, UK Government, Armed Forces and emergency services to provision urgent aerial support, either via private or MACA resource. The ecological and human costs of this wildfire are profoundly concerning, and action must be taken immediately.

The fire is now spreading into Coed y Brenin. Within miles of the fire are two power stations (nuclear and hydro). We have water available in reservoirs and lakes, so this should be being used to put out the fires. These wildfires should be being prioritised and not forgotten due to their rural location away from political hubs.
