Servicewomen and military families deserve the same preventative breast cancer care and treatment to which other women have access.

Breast Cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. However, when detected at an early stage, chances of survival increase dramatically. Accurate and efficient preventative screenings are crucial.

I am a mammographer and the wife of a veteran. I often hear how breast cancer is caught early because of 3D mammography -- and I know how critical it is that the military community has access to this life saving technology. 

According to an article in Society of Breast Imaging, “3D mammography, or digital breast tomosynthesis, has been shown by many research studies to improve the results of mammography when compared to usual 2D digital mammography. If a woman chooses to have mammography, she should have the best possible outcome and that means 3D instead of 2D in almost all cases.” 

3D Mammograms are covered by most major programs including Medicare. HOWEVER, under Tricare insurance, covering veterans, active military and dependent, it is NOT COVERED.
