The Issue

Every day, countless residents of our community face significant challenges in accessing The Abbey Stadium, our local gym and leisure centre. For many of us, particularly the elderly, disabled, and those with mobility issues, the current 20-minute walk from the nearest bus stop presents a daunting hurdle. This walk, which might seem manageable to some, becomes a barrier to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and enjoying the benefits of community-led activities.

For instance, my grandmother, who has always valued her fitness routine, finds it impossible to make this journey. The difficult trek to the stadium results in discomfort and discourages her from participating in the activities she loves and needs for her well-being. Hers is not an isolated case; many of my neighbours share similar stories of frustration and disappointment.

At present, public transportation options in our area do not adequately serve the needs of all community members. This inaccessible system hinders our collective goal of fostering a healthy, inclusive environment where everyone can thrive irrespective of age or physical ability.

We are petitioning the local Council to introduce a regular bus service stopping directly at The Abbey Stadium. By doing so, they can ensure that accessing community health and fitness resources is not limited by a lack of viable transportation options. This initiative would not only support our public wellness goals but also increase foot traffic, benefiting the leisure centre and local businesses alike.

Cities and towns across the country have successfully implemented accessible transportation solutions. An impactful example is Brighton's bus network which provides consistent, well-connected routes to its community sports centres, showing that with strategic planning and commitment, such changes can be immensely beneficial.

We appeal to the council to consider a plan of action that includes scheduling a direct bus route operating at a standard day-ticket fare. This change would transform the way residents interact with our town’s recreational facilities, promoting both physical health and social connectedness.
