Provide 24-hour access to food and essentials at FIU
The Issue
As an FIU student, I’ve experienced firsthand how difficult it can be to find food or basic necessities late at night on campus. Whether it’s after work, a late-night study session, an event, or simply being awake at 2 or 3 a.m., the current options are extremely limited. The vending machines and current Crave Café setup do not provide enough variety or quality to meet the needs of students who live, work, and study on campus.
FIU is home to thousands of students with different schedules and responsibilities. Many of us work late shifts, participate in campus organizations, attend evening events, or spend long hours studying. Despite this, access to food and basic necessities becomes very limited once most campus locations close.
We are asking FIU and its campus dining partners to provide a reliable 24-hour food and convenience option for students.
Our preferred solution is to extend the operating hours of Breezeway Market to provide 24-hour service. However, if this is not feasible, FIU should expand and modernize the existing Crave Café space into a fully stocked self-service convenience market. FIU already operates a self-service convenience kiosk in the Graham Center, demonstrating that this type of system can work successfully on campus.
We understand that campus activity is significantly lower during summer semesters and university breaks. Therefore, we support allowing FIU to adjust operating hours during these periods as needed while still prioritizing expanded access during the fall and spring semesters, when the majority of students are on campus.
A renovated Crave Café could offer:
• Fresh grab-and-go meals
• Healthy snacks and drinks
• Frozen meals
• School supplies
• Hygiene products
• Over-the-counter medications
• Other essential items students may need at any hour
Students should not have to leave campus in the middle of the night to buy a meal or basic necessities. A university that serves thousands of residential and commuter students should provide reasonable access to essential items around the clock.
By signing this petition, you are helping advocate for a safer, more convenient, and more student-friendly campus. Together, we can encourage FIU to improve late-night access to food and necessities for everyone.
