The Issue

The hardworking bus drivers on Transport for London (TfL) routes 115 and 58 at East Ham Central Park are currently facing a serious health and hygiene issue due to the lack of accessible toilet facilities. This oversight not only affects their personal wellbeing but also has potential negative implications for the service they provide to the public.

At present, drivers rely on nearby cafes and fried chicken shops to use toilet facilities, but these options are not practical. Many of these establishments charge for restroom use, and more importantly, they are not open during early mornings, late nights, or Sundays. As a result, bus drivers often find themselves in uncomfortable and unhealthy situations during their shifts, especially when they have extended hours on the roads.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, temporary portable toilets were provided to alleviate this issue, highlighting that a solution is both feasible and necessary. However, these facilities were removed post-lockdown, leaving drivers once again devoid of an essential amenity.

We urge TfL, the Mayor of London, the London Assembly, and the Bus Operators to acknowledge this pressing issue and take immediate action. By installing permanent, accessible toilet facilities at strategic points along routes 115 and 58, TfL and associated governing bodies can demonstrate a commitment to the welfare of their staff.

Providing such facilities is a basic necessity for occupational health and dignity, ensuring that bus drivers can perform their duties effectively without compromising their health or job satisfaction. Improvements in these areas will ultimately reflect positively on the quality and reliability of the bus service provided to Londoners.
