Tariff and talk about Canada becoming the 51st state is deja-vu for us in Almonte. In 1855, our forebearers also had American expansionism on their mind.  So they named their burgeoning town after Juan Almonte, a Mexican general who quite notably, was on the winning side at the Alamo. General Almonte was viewed as a principled David fighting a Goliath interested in swallowing up all North America. As the threat of American imperialism faded, so did the story of how our town got its name.  

Now that our American friends have hit us with 25% tariffs, I feel it’s time to retell our towns connection to the General by pronouncing Almonte properly: "Almont-EH".  So I'm collecting signatures to petition our Municipality to officially declare the pronunciation of Almonte at the 170th anniversary of our town's naming on June 22nd.
