I am a Clinical Lab Scientist, and every day I work diligently in a demanding and fast-paced environment, managing critical tasks that directly impact patient care. My colleagues Medical Lab Scientists, Phlebotomists and Medical Lab Technicians are committed to giving 100% on every shift to ensure the efficiency and reliability of laboratory results. However, we are now facing a significant hurdle: the licensure fees for Clinical Lab Scientists and Medical Lab Technicians have increased drastically from $179 to $300, for Phlebotomists from $100 to $150 and have shifted from a bi-annual to an annual requirement. This sudden and unexplained increase puts an unnecessary financial and time burden on us.

Clinical Lab Professionals, often working behind the scenes, play an indispensable role in healthcare, ensuring timely and accurate test results that are crucial for diagnosis and treatment decisions. Despite our essential contribution, we are rarely acknowledged with increased wages or improved working conditions. Instead, we are now asked to pay more in licensing fees, which feels like an unjust penalty for our dedication and service.               

In a profession where we must remain updated with the latest methodologies and technologies through continuous education, doubling the licensure fees adds financial stress on top of already demanding workloads. This is not only unfair but may discourage talented individuals from pursuing or continuing careers in clinical laboratory science, ultimately affecting the quality of healthcare services.

We urge the concerned licensing authorities to reconsider this fee increase and more importantly frequency of the renewals-annually vs previously biannually. Introducing such a steep hike without transparent communication or justification is not acceptable. Licensure should serve as a facilitator for practice, not a financial barrier.
