We demand an immediate stop to all Auckland cycle way projects pending a formal review

We believe that the new Auckland Transport cycle ways are unsafe and question whether this project is should take priority over other infrastructure investment. They also increase traffic congestion which adversely affects all road users - cyclists, motorists and pedestrians.
In a community context, cycle ways are a 'shared space', and directly affect people going about their daily lives. Therefore the entire community should be fully and lawfully informed about planning changes and involved as stakeholders at the very beginning of the planning process.
We demand an immediate stop to all work on the cycle ways being installed throughout Auckland until an independent review has been carried out, and that, going forward, full designs are presented to affected communities as part of an improved consultation process.
Attractive elements of the existing urban design are being destroyed, and mature trees are being chopped down and replaced with new trees which will take decades to provide the same benefits or - worse - asphalt, which is neither attractive nor environmentally responsible.
The loss of car parks at local shopping centres have already led to a massive drop in turnover, with many small businesses now facing closure, which is not socially responsible.
Auckland Transport's own project documentation states that only 1-4% of Aucklanders cycle. 52kms of cycle way has cost over $220 million to date.
With major issues such as the woefully neglected sewage system that currently disgorges raw sewerage into coastal waterways all over Auckland, is this the best spend of ratepayer funds?
