Protest of Data Centers Projected to be Built in The Tennessee Valley
The Issue
We are looking to oppose the continued expansion of large-scale, AI-focused data centers in Chattanooga and the greater East TN/NW GA area. Tennessee already has approximately 62 operating data centers and 16 proposed facilities, while data-center electricity consumption across the Tennessee Valley increased sevenfold from 2020 to 2025, reaching approximately 8.3 million MWh annually. These facilities can place significant demands on electricity and water resources while contributing to land disturbance, construction runoff, noise, emissions, habitat loss, and increased infrastructure needs. Residential electric bills in Tennessee communities hosting data centers increased 3.2% between 2023 and 2024, raising concerns about the financial burden of rapidly growing data-center demand on ordinary ratepayers. Chattanooga’s rivers, waterways, land, electricity, and public infrastructure are finite resources, and we believe they should be protected rather than increasingly allocated to support the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence. A typical large data center uses 3 to 7 million gallons of water every day. For the Chatt area, all this water is being pumped from the TN River. 263 species of fish alone live in the river. 58 species live nowhere else on Earth. 16 species are federally listed as threatened or endangered. This is actively destroying the TN Valley ecosystem. To reiterate, signers of this petition stand together in opposition to the expansion of large-scale AI data centers in Chattanooga and Hamilton County and in support of protecting our community’s environment, resources, affordability, and quality of life.
