Today, on 9 June 2025, representatives from Save Kavesar Lake Citizens’ Movement met TMC Commissioner and Mr. Sanjay Kelkar, MLA to file a written representation seeking cancellation of beautification project which will otherwise result into permanent disqualification of the Kavesar lake to be considered as a "wetland" under the Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules, 2017. Any wetland around which recreational facilities are constructed lose eligibility for legal protection under the Rules.  

It was emphasized in the meeting that though Thane City is known as the "City of Lakes", the administration has till date, not declared any lake as a "wetland". 

Since, Kavesar Lake is the last "natural" wetland of Thane City; this will be their final opportunity as other lakes have either being completely destroyed or concretized by vested interests.
