In a powerful show of citizen support for the urgent need to protect the 150-year-old Kavesar Lake in Thane, citizens and environmental activists gathered to protest the proposed concretisation plan of TMC. Under the guise of ‘beautification’, the plan proposes to build artificial structures which local residents and environmentalists warn will damage the wetland permanently.
People wore black and held placards with key information on why the wetland is beneficial for Thane’s ecosystem and the unique flora and fauna that make it so special. In the name of new facilities, most of which already exist within a few metres of the wetland lake, the plan attempts to add manmade structures right in the wetland habitat area.
Today’s protest in solidarity with #savekavesarlake is a testament to the growing support for Save Kavesar Lake Citizens Movement, supported by the Thane Greens Collective and Muse Foundation, which are tirelessly working to stop the concretisation and construction that will interfere with the sensitive ecosystem of the wetland and damage it beyond repair.
The Save Kavesar Lake Citizens Movement is stepping up its efforts with targeted initiatives given the urgency and has planned a heritage tree walk on Sunday, 8 June, 4.30 to 6pm at Kavesar Lake.
