Protecting Balls/Baldies Fields for the Community

Protecting Balls/Baldies Fields for the Community
The Issue
As a long-time resident of Newcastle-under-Lyme, I've watched with a heavy heart as our precious green spaces are slowly disappearing. Balls/Baldies Fields hold a special place in our community. They are not only beautiful spaces for recreation and relaxation but serve a critical purpose in managing local flooding. Yet, developers are eyeing these green havens to build uninspiring, cramped housing units. The land was sold by the new Reform, Staffordshire County Council Administration in July,2 months after taking charge, even after our concerns had been lodged by the local county councillor.
Our community deserves better. We need vibrant green spaces that we can enjoy for generations. These fields offer a refuge from the hustle and bustle of daily life, serving as playgrounds for children, trails for runners and walkers, and spots for picnics and community gatherings. They are essential to our mental and physical well-being.
Moreover, the significance of Balls/Baldies Fields goes beyond their aesthetic and recreational value. Newcastle-under-Lyme has been facing increased flooding, and these fields play a vital role in natural water management. We cannot ignore the risk of removing this natural defence and the impact it would have on our town.
We urge the local council to recognise the need to protect Balls/Baldies Fields. We must explore alternative development plans that would not jeopardise our essential green spaces. Urban planning should not only focus on building homes but also on protecting the environment and fostering community well-being. Solutions that strike a balance between development and ecological preservation are possible and necessary.
Join me in calling on our Newcastle under Lyme MP Mr Adam Jogee to help halt all development plans targeting Balls/Baldies Fields. Let's ensure these cherished fields continue to provide joy, safety, and sanctuary to our community. Please sign this petition and make your voice heard. Together, we can preserve the heart of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
