The Issue

I am a resident of Yuma County, and for years my family and community have been suffering due to ongoing biosolid (sewage sludge) land application occurring on State Trust Land.

The impacts are real and ongoing:

•Persistent and overwhelming foul odors that invade our homes
•Severe fly infestations that disrupt daily life
•A significant decline in our quality of life

Residents are unable to enjoy their homes, outdoor spaces, or even basic comfort without being affected.

This is not just a local issue. Biosolids are being transported from out of state, including California, and applied near residential areas in Yuma County.

Despite years of complaints, the problem persists. The issue remains unresolved largely because regulatory authority lies at the state level, with oversight by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and land control by the Arizona State Land Department.

While biosolids application may be permitted under certain regulations, it must not create ongoing nuisance conditions or negatively impact surrounding communities. What residents are experiencing clearly falls outside what should be considered acceptable.

We are calling for immediate action:

• Enforce all applicable environmental and biosolids regulations
• Investigate the ongoing odor and fly (vector) conditions impacting residents
• Terminate the lease on this State Trust Land site and pursue a more appropriate land use
• Prevent relocation of this operation elsewhere within Yuma County.

Yuma residents deserve to live in a clean, safe, and healthy environment. No community should be subjected to ongoing conditions that interfere with daily life and well-being.

Each signature helps amplify our voice and send a clear message to state decision-makers that action is needed now.

I’ve been trying to get rid of California being able to import their waste and put it on our land for the last nine years. I’ve been fighting it because California should take care of their own waste. I am also concerned about the possible contamination of our ground water. Thank You, Lynne [Note: The Change.org Civic Engagement Team reaches out to decision makers to let them know about petitions in their community and to help facilitate engagement with supporters.
