PROTECT YOUR RIGHT TO VOTE
The Issue
**Since we are submitting this to the City Council, please check the box to display your name on this petition. Also, comment on how you or anyone you know are a "Community Interest Stakeholder!" Thank you!**
We, the residents of the great City of Los Angeles (and beyond), strongly oppose the City Council’s recommendation for Neighborhood Council Systems Reform (Council File #18-0467, Item #10C) to remove “Community Interest Stakeholder” provision from current bylaws, which allows non- live/work/own stakeholders their well-deserved right to vote. Removing this provision would create a one size fits all definition for all 99 Neighborhood Councils. We recommend that each Neighborhood Council be allowed to define their eligible voters as needed for the unique community they serve.
This past June, “community interest stakeholders” were able to vote against the sub-division of WCKNC, even though they did not live/work/own within the boundaries. This vote surpassed any expectations by City officials and set a citywide record for the number of votes ever recorded for a neighborhood council election.
If we don't speak up now to convince the Board of Neighborhood Commissioners to strongly oppose the above-mentioned motion, close to 20,000 voters who came out to vote on June 19th, the "community interest stakeholders" will no longer have that right to vote, not only for the 2019 WCKNC board election, but for any election going forward. The voice of Koreatown will be gone and no one will hear our voice.
This move disenfranchises all the people who DEPEND on the services of Koreatown. How many of you, your parents, or grandparents, your friends, go to doctors, pharmacies, CPAs, attorneys, brokers, agents, financial advisors, hair dressers, estheticians, community organizations, churches, markets, etc. who are in Koreatown? Why do they decide to choose these services in Koreatown as opposed to those in their own neighborhoods?
Up next is the Wilshire Center Koreatown Neighborhood Council’s Board Member election. You will not be able to vote if the Board of Commissioners decide to remove “Community Interest Stakeholders” as they are currently accepted. There are significant changes happening on the board for Wilshire Center Koreatown Neighborhood Council and the Korean Community needs representation. The Neighborhood Council plays a vital role in being the ears, eyes, and voice of its neighborhood.
So what can you do? Sign this petition and let your voice be heard! Please join us in attending Monday’s Townhall meeting, located at City Hall at 1pm. While it may be difficult to attend because it’s during business hours, but if you are able to or know anyone that can make it, please join us!
