For more than a decade, a wolf known as 1090F has lived almost her entire life inside the safety of Yellowstone National Park. She's believed to be the oldest wolf in the park, and she leads Mollie's Pack, a family whose lineage stretches back to the wolves reintroduced to Yellowstone over 30 years ago. Generations of scientists have studied this pack to understand how wolves raise their young, work together, and support the health of the whole ecosystem.

This year, the pack denned just outside the park's boundary, in Wyoming's Shoshone National Forest. That single choice, made by the wolves themselves, now puts five adults and five pups inside Wolf Hunt Area 1, where Wyoming's 2026 wolf hunting season opens September 15. The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission has already approved a quota that allows wolves to be killed there this fall.

A family shouldn't lose its protection because it crossed a line on a map. Wolves are intelligent, social animals. They raise pups together, care for injured pack members, and build bonds that last a lifetime. As apex predators, they also help keep the entire ecosystem in balance. This threat comes at an especially hard time, too — wildlife officials already lowered the state's wolf mortality quota this year because of a distemper outbreak spreading through the region.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Commission can still act. Closing Wolf Hunt Area 1 to hunting for the 2026 season would let Mollie's Pack, including matriarch 1090F, live to raise the next generation of Yellowstone's wolves.
