Protect workers’ pension savings from government control

Protect workers’ pension savings from government control
The Issue
For years, I have diligently contributed to my pension, planning for a secure financial future after retirement. However, the recent discussions by the Labour party about unlocking up to £400 billion of pension savings for UK investment deeply concern me. This sum represents the hard-earned contributions of countless workers, and it is alarming to think that such a vast pool of money might be within the reach of ministers and subject to government interests.
The current political discourse suggests that these funds could be diverted to prop up private markets, sectors that are already showing signs of distress. Firms that are struggling with unsellable assets might view our pension schemes as an easy exit from their financial predicaments. The lure of higher returns in private markets is undeniable, but these come with significant risks: they are less transparent, harder to value, and can change unpredictably. If the government gains control over these funds, the temptation to use them for their own agendas will only grow.
Our pension savings are our own—they are the security we have built over years of hard work and sacrifice. Permitting government ministers any access to these funds is a slippery slope that compromises our financial independence when we need it most. It’s not their money; it never was, and it never should be.
Let’s unite to protect our pensions and ensure that they aren’t used as a convenient financial lever for the government. It's time for us to take a stand and object to any plans that would allow government overreach into our savings. Our future security shouldn’t be gambled on unstable markets.
Sign this petition to send a clear message to the decision-makers: our pension savings are not for government use. Let’s preserve our right to financial autonomy and safeguard the retirement we have worked so hard to achieve.
