Protect Women Worldwide

Protect Women Worldwide
The Issue
Torture. That’s what Amnesty International and the United Nations call the treatment of a 10-year-old girl in Paraguay.
First she was raped by her stepfather, and when her mother tried to get the police to help her she was ignored. Now she’s pregnant – at 10 years old – and the government of Paraguay is refusing to allow her an abortion. Being forced to carry this pregnancy to term could destroy her – both physically and emotionally.
That doesn’t seem to matter to Paraguayan officials. And, sadly, it doesn’t seem to matter much to politicians in the United States either. Because even if she could find her way to a U.S.-funded health clinic, she still couldn’t get an abortion because of a 40-year-old law known as the Helms Amendment.
President Obama can change this with the stroke of a pen and make clear that U.S. funded health clinics around the world can provide safe abortions to women who’ve been raped, who are victims of incest, or whose lives would be threatened by carrying a pregnancy to term.
