“Protect Women’s Right to Choose Their Home After Marriage”
“Protect Women’s Right to Choose Their Home After Marriage”
The Issue
The Problem:
In India, it is widely expected that women leave their parental homes after marriage and move to their husband’s household. While often called “tradition,” this practice places a disproportionate emotional, social, and financial burden on women. It disrupts their support networks, impacts their mental health, and often fractures their families. This expectation also reinforces gender inequality: sons are typically allowed to remain in their parental homes, while daughters are expected to relocate. Such practices treat women as secondary in their families, reducing their autonomy and dignity.
Why It Matters:
Marriage should be a partnership of equals, not a transfer of responsibility or relocation requirement for one gender. Forcing or pressuring women to leave their homes after marriage is inconsistent with India’s constitutional values of equality, dignity, and non-discrimination (Articles 14, 15, and 21).
What We Are Asking For:
We call on the Government of India, the Ministry of Women & Child Development, and state policymakers to: Recognize women’s right to choose their residence after marriage.
Promote flexible living arrangements that do not impose unequal burdens on women. Educate society to treat daughters and sons equally in marital and family obligations.
Our Vision:
A society where women have autonomy over their living choices, where families are not fractured by unequal expectations, and where marriage is a true partnership of equals.
Take Action:
Sign this petition to support women’s right to autonomy, equality, and dignity in their homes. Let’s create a culture that respects women as equals from the start of marriage, not just in principle.
