Protect Women On Pinterest From Non-Consensual Sexualization
The Issue
Pinterest is a platform used predominantly by women to share fashion, beauty, fitness, lifestyle, and creative inspiration. However, many women, including me, are experiencing their content being saved by men to sexual and fetish boards without their consent. It’s annoying to have to delete your pin an re-upload it JUST to remove it from a disgusting board.
Current safety tools are insufficient. Blocking an account does not prevent men from saving women’s Pins to inappropriate boards, and reporting systems are slow, unclear, and often ineffective. As a result, women are forced to repeatedly report the same behavior, or remove their own content to avoid being sexually exploited.
This creates an unsafe and violating experience for women who simply want to exist and create online without their images being repurposed for sexual gratification. Women should not have to tolerate non-consensual sexualization as the cost of participating on a mainstream platform.
Pinterest has a responsibility to protect its users. Allowing this behavior to continue signals that women’s consent, safety, and autonomy are secondary to engagement metrics.
We are asking Pinterest to implement stronger safety measures to protect women and respect consent. This includes gender-restricted saving options that allow users to block men from saving their Pins, an opt-in women-only posting mode, effective blocking that fully prevents interactions, faster and more transparent enforcement of sexualized content reports, stronger penalties for repeat offenders, and formal recognition that non-consensual sexualization of women’s content is a safety and consent issue.
