Protect Windsor Forest masjid from disruptive noise
The Issue
On Monday 21st September 2026 our online class was disrupted by loud music emanating from a vehicle parked nearby .It is the most recent of an ongoing violation against the sanctity of the masjid .
There are entities in the immediate vicinity of the masjid where alcohol is sold and consumed .
The activities at these venues are not consistent with the activities of the masjid and Madrasa .
Loud continuous and extremely lewd music is being played from vehicles and from inside these entities. The language of Revellers can be very sickening and disturbing.
The entities involved are few specifically The SOAN RUMSHOP WHICH IS LESS THAN 200 FEET AWAY FROM THE ANJUMAN TAJALLI ISLAM AND THE CARRIFOUR SUPERMARKET.
The usual disturbance is mostly from' Soan ' Mr Boodram junior who operates the Rum Shop.
Students and teachers, like Sis Swabaireen Wazidali (Sis Swob), who partake in-person and online, faced significant challenges as they attempted to hold their usual sessions in an environment that should have been conducive to learning and reflection.
This Masjid established since 1970 is more than just a place of worship for us—it is a cornerstone of our community, a beacon of peace and spirituality. Yet, its sanctity is frequently violated by rampant noises and vulgar behaviour that spill over from nearby establishments. This constant disturbance not only hinders our educational activities but also our ability to practice our faith in peace.
According to the Environmental Protection Act of Guyana, noise pollution is a serious environmental issue that needs stringent regulation. Despite this, enforcement in Windsor Forest has been lacklustre at best. The impacts are not just spiritual and educational; they have psychological and physical dimensions, contributing to stress and other health issues among community members exposed to incessant noise.
We call upon all levels of government—local, regional, and national—to take immediate and effective action to prevent these disturbances. Implementing stricter noise control measures, enforcing existing laws, and holding establishments accountable are vital steps needed to safeguard our community spaces. It is crucial that businesses respect the rights of their neighbours and operate within legal sound limits, especially when in close proximity to educational and religious institutions.
