Protect wildlife from vehicle impacts in Morton NP in Bundanoon

Protect wildlife from vehicle impacts in Morton NP in Bundanoon
The issue
Morton National Park's 'Bundanoon Precinct' is managed by the NSW National Parks & Wildlife Service (NPWS). The NPWS sealed the narrow and often damaged dirt road from the Park entry to Echo Point Lookout in recent years. This lowered maintenance costs and reduced sediment runoff and dust, but inadvertently encouraged dangerous and inconsiderate driving on the better road, increasing harm to wildlife.
This petition calls on the NSW Minister for the Environment to require and resource the NPWS to promptly install effective traffic calming measures to prevent or at least significantly reduce dangerous driving that threatens wildlife and Park users, especially on the narrow, sealed road. This should be supported by increased compliance checks, and if feasible, increased Police patrols, especially at night during holidays.
This petition has been motivated by seeing or learning of an increased number of native animals being killed or injured by vehicles along the sealed road, and by seeing too many near-misses between speeding vehicles, other drivers or walkers. It's bad enough that so much wildlife is injured or killed on our public roads, but it is very disappointing to see the same problems happening in our local National Park on what is signposted as a low-speed access road. Sadly, we can't stop people driving badly, but effective traffic calming measures (things like speed humps and chicanes), plenty of appropriate signage, and increased law enforcement can help reduce the problem.
This petition is supported and inspired by the unfunded wombat rescue work of John Creighton of Wombat Care Bundanoon.
