Protect wildlife from road fatalities on busy roads

The Issue

Sadly so many times when I have driven along the A47 and surrounding busy roads in Norfolk, an overwhelming sight greets me – the lifeless bodies of badgers, deer, and numerous other animals cruelly splayed across the tarmac. Each instance is a heart-wrenching reminder of the urgent need for protective measures that safeguard our precious wildlife from the perils of main roads.

The A47 is just one of many roads in the UK where wildlife casualties occur far too frequently. According to the Mammal Society, it's estimated that each year in the UK, almost 100,000 animals fall victim to road traffic accidents. This grim statistic doesn't only count for the loss of life; it further disrupts local ecosystems and contributes to a decline in species which are already threatened.

A practical and effective solution lies in the installation of barriers and wildlife crossings along major roads and motorways. By introducing these measures, we can guide animals away from dangerous paths and reduce the risk of roadkill significantly. Countries like the Netherlands have successfully implemented eco-bridges and underpasses which have drastically reduced wildlife fatalities on their roads.

We urge the local councils and transport authorities to take similar action here. Protecting wildlife not only preserves biodiversity but also maintains the safety and balance of our natural environment. Implementing these changes would reflect a responsible and forward-thinking approach to coexistence with nature.

By signing this petition, you are calling on the responsible authorities to construct wildlife barriers and safe crossings on the A47 and extend these measures across the UK. Join me in creating a safer environment for our wildlife and help bring an end to these unnecessary deaths. Please sign and share this petition widely to raise awareness and push for the change our wildlife desperately needs.
