Human and animal lives hang in the balance in Roxborough Park and Sterling Ranch, CO. It's infuriating to witness reckless drivers endanger our community — excessive speeding, aggressive tailgating, texting while driving, and blatant disregard for safety are taking a toll. It's heart-wrenching to see wildlife, especially deer, being struck down like trophies, left to suffer on the pavement without a second thought from the perpetrators. This callousness and selfishness must be addressed immediately.

The residents of Sterling Ranch and nearby areas are reaching out to Douglas County officials and law enforcement for swift action to counteract this menace. To safeguard both human and animal lives, it is urgent to implement adequate traffic calming measures, install traffic enforcement cameras, and increase police patrols along Waterton Road. These actions are vital to deter reckless behaviors and ensure a safer environment for everyone.

We, the undersigned, call upon Douglas County officials, law enforcement, and any responsible stakeholders to take immediate action to address this safety crisis.

Our key concerns:

• Repeated deer fatalities, despite posted flashing wildlife crossing and speed limit signs
• Aggressive speeding and tailgating, even in residential zones 
• Near-collisions with pedestrians and cyclists at designated crossings
• Lack of consistent patrol or enforcement creating a sense of lawlessness in the area 

We are requesting the following actions:

✅ Installation of speed bumps, rumble strips, or roundabouts
✅ Implementation of speed enforcement cameras or radar feedback signs
✅ Increased Sheriff’s Office patrol presence during peak traffic times
✅ Enhanced wildlife protection measures, including fencing or motion-activated lights
✅ Public transparency on what action steps will be taken and when

Statistics support this need: according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding accounts for roughly one-third of all roadway fatalities, while distracted driving claimed over 3,000 lives just in 2019. Here in Colorado, vehicle-wildlife collisions are sadly common, causing significant harm and an estimated $66.4 million in damages annually, according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association.

It is imperative that Douglas County protect our roads for the safety and well-being of everyone and the preservation of our cherished wildlife. 

We are not willing to wait for a human fatality to occur before these issues are taken seriously. As tax-paying citizens, parents, commuters, and nature lovers, we demand change now, not after another life is lost.
