Welwyn Garden City dry ski slope is a rare and highly valuable sports facility. The ski slope is used extensively all year round by local schools, community groups, disability groups and ski race training camps coming from a wide catchment area. The ski slope is on a site, which also includes other community sports facilities (a golf driving range), that Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council has targeted for redevelopment to housing.
British skiing is now firmly on the world snow sports map, and is growing quickly. Dave Ryding, the current World Cup Alpine Ski Racer, started his career on a dry ski slope in the UK. ‘Eddie the Eagle’ Edwards started ski jumping on a dry ski slope in the UK. There are hundreds of young skiers that use Welwyn dry ski slope every week. Some of these have real aspirations to be an international ski racer, many others of all age groups use it for team sport or just to keep fit.
A number of other UK dry slope ski facilities have been lost over the last few years. The loss of Welwyn Garden City dry ski slope as a community sport facility would be a devastating set-back for British skiing.
