The Issue

Weld County Commissioners are about to approve a massive AI data center just outside Greeley — with a final vote scheduled for September 9.

Global AI wants a special permit to build the facility on an industrial site near Greeley. Data centers like this one use enormous amounts of electricity and water to run and cool their computer systems, and Weld County hasn't laid out a clear plan for how it will handle that added strain.

Patricia Garcia Nelson, who grew up in the area, put it plainly: "I have so many concerns around the electricity usage, around the water usage," she said. "I don't feel like the county has the resources to be able to sustain something like this," according to 9NEWS. She also said she had trouble finding basic information about the project before the public meeting.

Weld County already deals with drought and tight water supplies. Adding a facility this size to the local grid and water system could raise costs and strain resources for the families, farmers, and businesses who call this county home — long after any construction jobs are gone.

Commissioners have only been asked to vote yes or no on September 9, not to slow down and answer these questions first. Residents deserve real answers about water and power impacts before that vote happens.

Sign the petition to demand Weld County Commissioners address the water and power impacts of this data center before they vote.
