Virginia's environment and public safety depend on qualified geological expertise. Currently, geologist licensure in Virginia is voluntary, leaving the public vulnerable to unqualified practitioners. The Virginia Geologist Workgroup (VGW), with support from the Virginia Association of Professional Soil Scientists (VAPSS), is advocating for mandatory licensure to ensure that only qualified professionals perform geological work that impacts public health, safety, and the environment. This effort builds on recent legislative success (HB 287, now law) that strengthens the definition of geological practice.
