Protect Victorians – Reform Self-Defence Laws Now!

The issue

Victorians deserve to feel safe in their own homes—but rising home invasions and violent burglaries are leaving families vulnerable. Every day, too many households face the terrifying reality of intruders, and too often, the law does not clearly protect those defending themselves.

📈 The Fact, The Problem:

Recent statistics show that aggravated residential burglaries in Victoria have increased by approximately 143% over the past decade, from around 2,300 incidents in 2014 to about 5,590 in 2024. This equates to over 15 home invasions every day across the state.

A small group of repeat offenders, many under 25, are responsible for a disproportionate number of these crimes. In 2024, 244 individuals were arrested multiple times, highlighting gaps in the justice system that allow violent offenders to continue threatening Victorian families.

🏛️ What’s Happening Politically:

On 13 August 2025, a motion to review Victoria’s self-defence laws was narrowly defeated in Parliament by just one vote (18–17). Premier Jacinta Allan, the Greens, and the Justice for Animals Party opposed the reform—even as repeat offenders and youth gang members continue to be released on bail or avoid accountability. Law-abiding Victorians remain vulnerable.

📝 What We Demand:

We call on the Victorian Government to:

Review and reform self-defence laws so homeowners can protect themselves without fear of prosecution, while implementing safeguards to ensure the law is used responsibly and cannot be misused.

Adopt a “castle doctrine”-style law to make it clear people can defend their homes safely.

Address the failures of the justice system that allow violent offenders to evade consequences.

🔒 Why It Matters:

Every Victorian deserves to feel safe in their own home. Reforming self-defence laws will allow families to protect themselves confidently and safely, with clear legal boundaries that prevent misuse.

At the same time, offenders must be held accountable and prosecuted appropriately. Repeat offenders should not be repeatedly let off, ensuring that law-abiding residents are protected and justice is upheld.
