The Issue

In a harrowing event that hit too close to home, my sister-in-law's sister was kidnapped by a former boyfriend involved in organized crime. After her rescue and his arrest, we believed she was safe. However, he somehow bypassed the justice system, returned to the streets, and shockingly murdered her in broad daylight, leaving our community in profound grief and deep concern over how the system failed so drastically.

This tragedy underscores a systemic issue: victims of domestic violence are alarmingly vulnerable due to inadequate protections by law. We have seen perpetrators sidestep justice and continue to pose lethal threats. Alarmingly, these incidents aren't isolated, and it’s imperative we act now to implement robust protective measures for victims across the United States.

We demand the establishment of stronger legal mechanisms, starting with automatic and mandatory Temporary Restraining Orders (TROs) against perpetrators immediately following a domestic violence report. Current gaps in process allow offenders to exploit the lag in legal protections, endangering victims' lives. In California alone, there were over 160,000 domestic violence-related calls to law enforcement in 2018, demonstrating the urgent need for legislative reform.

Furthermore, victims should be allowed, with appropriate discretion and validation, to legally obtain firearms for self-defense. The security of this information must be ensured, limiting access to only the state's high-ranking officials like the mayor or governor. This would maintain the victim's privacy while providing them with a meaningful line of defense.

We also propose a unique identification card or number system exclusively for domestic violence victims to streamline access to the protections and services they deserve, reducing bureaucratic delays.

Lastly, all firearm suppliers should be mandated to surrender sales records to the state immediately, creating a descriptive database that aids law enforcement in monitoring and preventing illegal acquisitions.

These measures will safeguard the lives of thousands who are currently left with inadequate protection. By supporting this petition, you help compel our lawmakers to take this urgent issue seriously and provide lifesaving reforms for domestic violence survivors. I urge you to sign this petition to ensure justice and protection are more than just words for those who live in fear. Together, we can drive meaningful change and avert further tragedies. Please join us in this vital cause.
