Protect university students' right to safe education in Tigray
The Issue
As a university student from the Tigray region in Ethiopia, I made a difficult decision to leave Mekelle, driven by the escalating risks associated with ongoing conflict and forced conscription. With the summer break coming to an end, students like myself are expected to return to universities such as Aksum, Adigrat, Raya and Mekelle Universities to continue our education. However, we are now faced with a heartbreaking choice: pursuing our academic dreams or safeguarding our personal safety.
No student should be placed in the predicament of choosing between advancing their education and ensuring their safety. The current situation in Tigray, marked by ongoing strife and the threat of forced military enlistment, places students in a position of profound jeopardy. Education is a fundamental right, crucial for the development of both individuals and communities, and should never be compromised by circumstances beyond our control.
The Ethiopian government, international educational bodies, and humanitarian organizations need to urgently address this pressing issue. Comprehensive safety measures must be established to ensure that students in Tigray can safely access their higher education. This includes temporarily relocating students into safer universities in other regions, where they can continue their studies without interruption until conditions allow for a safe return.
Moreover, it is crucial that forced conscription of students be categorically prohibited. Students deserve the right to pursue their studies without fear of being coerced into military service. Protecting our educational environments from becoming sources of distress and danger is paramount for the growth and well-being of students and the future of the Tigray region and Ethiopia.
We implore relevant authorities to recognize and address this critical situation. By prioritizing the safety and education of students, we invest in a more peaceful and prosperous future for all.
