The blue catfish, a native species to the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio river basins, has been introduced into Virginia waters for recreational fishing. 

Trophy size blue catfish are those that exceed 32 inches in length or 20 pounds in weight.

Unfortunately, overfishing threatens these magnificent creatures. According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR), there has been a significant decrease in the population of trophy size blue catfish over the past decade.

We believe that establishing regulations on catching trophy size blue catfish will help preserve this unique aquatic creature while also protecting our local ecosystems from potential imbalance caused by their disappearance.

We urge lawmakers and environmental authorities in Virginia to implement measures ensuring the protection of trophy size blue catfish across all state waters. This includes enforcing limits on trophy blue catfish and maintaining size restrictions for commercial and recrestional harvest.
