The Issue

e 9-acre wooded area between Bellaire Ave and 150th st in the Belvedere Heights subdivision of Grandview has served as an important natural buffer for nearby residents and local wildlife. Now, a proposed apartment development threatens to clear this land entirely.

This woodland is home to deer, groundhogs, opossums, and countless bird species that residents regularly see moving through our neighborhood. The mature trees and undeveloped land also provide something increasingly rare in our community: natural green space that helps reduce noise, provide a serene landscape, and support local ecosystems.

Residents on Bellaire Ave already deal with serious flooding issues during heavy rain. Removing large amounts of trees and natural ground cover could worsen runoff and drainage problems for the surrounding neighborhood. Instead of addressing the infrastructure concerns existing residents already face, the city is considering adding a dense apartment complex that may increase strain on the area.

The woods also act as a sound barrier from nearby highway traffic. Clearing this land would likely increase noise pollution for families living in Belvedere Heights and permanently change the character of the neighborhood.

We are asking city officials to:

Reject the proposed apartment development between Bellaire Ave and 150th st
Preserve this important wooded area and wildlife habitat
Consider the flooding and infrastructure concerns already affecting residents
Prioritize responsible development that protects existing neighborhoods and green space

A public hearing on this proposal is scheduled for June 3rd. We urge residents and supporters to sign this petition and stand with the Belvedere Heights community in protecting one of the few remaining natural areas in our neighborhood.
