Protect the students and staff of Alphington Grammar School

Protect the students and staff of Alphington Grammar School
The issue
On 17 June 2025, the Yarra City Council advised that in September 2025, the Alphington Grammar School fence and gates across the entire entrance to the School (Old Heidelberg Road - OHR) will be removed, therefore allowing public cars to access the road through the school.
The Yarra City Council has allocated approximately $400,000 in funding in
its draft budget (25/26) to undertake works at OHR.
The proposal includes the following:
• Removal of the gates and structure across OHR;
• Construction of a new pedestrian crossing over OHR; and
• Asphalt, drainage and footpath works.
The Council are willing to spend $400,000 to tear down a fence which puts the safety of children, teachers and staff at significant risk of death or catastrophic injury.
The school and school community are disappointed and outraged and the School will continue to pursue the decision of the Yarra City Council further.
To quote recently elected Mayor of the City of Yarra, Stephen Jolly, 'it is time to bring the Council back to a 'common sense' approach following the previous Greens-dominated Council (Herald Sun, 26 November 2024). Clearly Stephen Jolly, this is far from a 'common sense' approach.
Please sign this petition to ensure the safety of students and staff at Alphington Grammar School.
