Over the past week, our community has taken several important steps to demand transparency and environmental accountability from Sonoma County officials regarding the approval of waste-incinerating toilets on the coast.

Here’s what we’ve done:

  • Filed a formal Public Records Act request with Sonoma County to obtain all documentation, technical data, and justification for how these combustion devices were permitted without environmental review.
  • Submitted an official request to the Northern Sonoma County Air Pollution Control District (NSCAPCD) for a formal emissions determination and regulatory review under California Health & Safety Code § 42300. This filing challenges the county’s decision to classify these units as “ministerial” approvals, bypassing air-quality oversight.
  • Contacted regional and state environmental agencies to alert them of the potential release of hazardous pollutants — including dioxins, heavy metals, and PFAS “forever chemicals.”
  • Mobilized neighbors across Carmet, Bodega Bay, and the Sonoma Coast to join our growing network of residents, farmers, and environmental advocates calling for an immediate halt to any new installations until proper review is conducted.

These are major milestones in our movement. Each action builds the legal and public record needed to compel accountability and ensure that the health of our community and coastline comes first — not convenience or expediency.

What’s next:
We’ll continue coordinating with state regulators, scientists, and allied environmental groups to push for a full emissions study and to bring this issue before the California Coastal Commission if necessary.

If you haven’t already, please share this petition with your neighbors and local groups. Every signature strengthens our voice and helps protect the Sonoma Coast for generations to come.

Together, we are proving that community action works — and that our coast deserves nothing less than full transparency and environmental justice.
