As a local resident of San Diego, I am deeply concerned with the balance of life on our shores. We have ample space for our beach activities while allowing ample room for wildlife, specifically seals in La Jolla Cove. This petition aims to safeguard their territory.

The Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 has successfully ensured these seals' thriving colonies. Yet, there have been recent attempts to open Seal Rock, their natural habitat, to human intrusion, jeopardizing their peaceful co-existence. It is important to remember that the San Diego County coast houses over 50% of the world's Pacific harbor seal population [Marine Mammal Center, 2021], emphasizing the need to defend their territory.

Interacting with or disturbing seals and their pups can have tremendously negative consequences. It can lead to mothers abandoning their pups and aggression towards humans out of fear. Additionally, seals play a vital role in maintaining ocean health, impacting commercial fisheries and tourism, a significant income source for San Diego's economy.
