About the Via Verde

In August 2010, an energy company in Puerto Rico submitted an application to begin the Via Verde Pipeline project, a natural gas pipeline. The proposed 92-mile pipeline will cross the entire island of Puerto Rico, running through mountainous areas, rain forests, coastal areas, and habitats of species indigenous only to Puerto Rico, as well as human populated areas.

Species Affected

If this pipeline is allowed to continue, it will threaten over 78 endangered and threatened species, as well as many others, including, but not limited to:

Antillean Manatee
Green Sea Turtle
Leatherback Sea Turtle
Hawksbill Sea Turtle
Puerto Rican Shark-Shinned Hawk
Puerto Rican Broad-Winged Hawk
Golden Coqui
Puerto Rican Crested Toad
Puerto Rican Boa
Yellow-Shouldered Black Bird
Puerto Rican Parrot
Brown Pelican
Puerto Rican Plain Pigeon

There are also many endangered and threatened species of plants that will be affected, including corals, trees, etc.
