Thank you everyone for the huge response after Eileen spoke about care homes on BBC's Victoria Derbyshire, Channel 4 News and Five Live on 6th July - your messages are very moving and much appreciated. Eileen will get back personally to everyone who called the helpline so please bear with us a little longer. We have tremendous respect for the thousands of excellent hardworking care workers who do their very best to provide good care in difficult circumstances. Edna's Law will help them to do so by making it safe to raise concerns and to get action taken at an early stage. This is how we can improve care in the long run. Some well-meaning people have been misled into thinking that CCTV is the answer to abuse in care homes but it definitely is NOT. Protection of whistleblowers and ACCOUNTABILITY in the form of Edna's Law IS - and accountability must start at the top of CQC. Please see the bottom of the page on the following link where we explain why CCTV won't work: http://www.thewhistler.org/compassion-in-care.html We will never "work with CQC" because we know how they operate. They want to get people on side to contain them and use them for public relations spin, not genuinely to improve care. The reason we know is because we exposed how the CQC deliberately misled the public by hiding bad care home reports using their care home re-registration scam (evidence on our website in "CQC An Ongoing Concern"). We have evidence of how they revealed whistleblowers' identities, even going so far as encouraging reprisals. We have evidence of how CQC has falsely claimed not to have received specific concerns. One example was when Andrea Sutcliffe lied about the Old Deanery whistleblowers (remember BBC Panorama?), not realising one of them, Karis Le Winton, was present to challenge the lie. Who would want to "work with CQC" when they see the evidence of such misconduct? Andrea Sutcliffe said on TV "We all want the same thing" but we very much doubt she wants something we want, which is for people like her, David Behan and Robert Francis to be held to account for misconduct and failing to respond appropriately to concerns. We're still waiting for Jeremy Hunt to respond to this open letter which contains links to some of our evidence: http://www.compassionincare.com/node/317 The full Victoria Derbyshire item is at http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b08x206n/victoria-derbyshire-06072017 (starts at about 15:33). Please keep sharing this petition because Edna's Law is vital for all of us, not only elderly people and not only in the care sector. "Everyone is Edna, whether they know it or not" because everyone is at risk of harm when concerns are ignored, or when workers are too scared to speak up. Thank you again for your support.
