Please join us at the Gogebic County Commissioners meeting, this Wednesday at 5pm CST, at the County Courthouse in Bessemer!
Protect the Porkies will be delivering a comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of the proposed Copperwood Mine, closest metallic sulfide mine to Lake Superior in history, immediately adjacent to Porcupine Mountains State Park (spoiler alert: the costs far outweigh any benefits).
The County Commissioners have previously submitted multiple Letters of Support for the proposed $50 million Michigan grant to the mine. Now is our chance to respectfully educate our officials on the reasons for the widespread resistance against using taxpayer dollars to help a foreign company ship our copper out of country, jeopardize our largest, cleanest freshwater sea, and sacrifice the wilderness character of a beloved old growth outdoor recreation area, all for the sake of a handful of boom-and-bust jobs, many of which would go to specialized non-residents.
We know there’s a lot of energy focused at the national politics right now — that’s great! But please remember that the local level is where we are most empowered to make a difference. A strong community presence at Wednesday’s meeting would send a powerful message.
